Job Summary:
The Adaptive Physical Education Specialist will be responsible for developing and implementing adaptive physical education programs for individuals with disabilities within the sports and athletics department. This role requires expertise in assessing, planning, and delivering tailored physical education activities to ensure the inclusion and participation of individuals with diverse abilities.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct comprehensive assessments to determine the functional abilities, limitations, and goals of individuals with disabilities.
2. Design and implement individualized adaptive physical education programs based on assessment findings and specific needs of each participant.
3. Develop instructional strategies and adapt existing physical education curriculum to meet the unique requirements of individuals with disabilities.
4. Provide coaching and guidance to participants to enhance their motor skills, physical fitness, and overall physical well-being.
5. Collaborate with sports coaches, teachers, and support staff to ensure integration of adaptive physical education programs into existing athletic programs.
6. Regularly evaluate participant progress and adjust program components as necessary to maximize individual development and achievement.
7. Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, and program modifications.
8. Ensure a safe and inclusive environment for participants during all physical activities, adhering to established safety guidelines and best practices.
9. Stay up-to-date with current research, trends, and advancements in adaptive physical education to continuously improve program offerings.
10. Provide guidance and support to other staff members involved in adaptive sports programs.
11. Participate in professional development activities, conferences, and workshops to enhance knowledge and skills in adaptive physical education.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field. (Master's degree preferred)
2. Minimum of 3 years of experience in designing and implementing adaptive physical education programs.
3. In-depth knowledge of various disabilities and their impact on motor skills, mobility, and physical fitness.
4. Familiarity with adaptive equipment, techniques, and modifications to facilitate physical activity for individuals with disabilities.
5. Strong understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics.
6. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively convey instructions and provide feedback to participants, staff, and parents.
7. Demonstrated ability to assess individual needs, develop individualized plans, and track progress.
8. Proven ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse groups of professionals.
9. Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
10. Current CPR and First Aid certification.
11. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in working with sensitive information.
12. Passion for promoting inclusivity, diversity, and equal access to physical activity for individuals with disabilities.
